You’ve booked your newborn photography session, picked out the sweetest little details, and imagined those peaceful photographs of your baby curled up and sleeping.
Then one thought pops into your mind:
“But what if my baby doesn’t sleep?”

If this has crossed your mind, you are definitely not alone.
As a newborn photographer, this is one of those worries I completely understand.
Parents see beautiful newborn portraits online and naturally assume that the baby must have slept perfectly through the entire session.
Here’s something that may surprise you:
They don’t.
Some babies sleep deeply. Some wake up every few minutes. Some arrive wide-eyed and curious about absolutely everything happening around them. Others decide that their photography session is the perfect day to cluster feed, stretch, wiggle, or simply stay awake.
And all of those things are completely okay.
A successful newborn session does not depend on your baby sleeping the entire time.
Your Baby Doesn't Have to "Perform"
One of the most important things I want parents to understand before their newborn photography session is that there is nothing your baby needs to accomplish.
They don't need to sleep on command.
They don't need to stay perfectly still.
They don't need to cooperate with a schedule.
They're newborns.
Our job is to work around them—not expect them to work around us.
After photographing babies and families for many years, I have learned that every newborn brings a completely different personality into the studio. Even at only a few days or weeks old, babies already have preferences.
Some love being wrapped.
Some want their hands near their faces.
Some settle immediately when being held.
Some want to eat again even though Mom is absolutely certain they just ate.
That's newborn life.
Instead of fighting those moments, an experienced newborn photographer knows how to adapt to them.
Awake Newborn Photos Can Be Absolutely Beautiful
Here's another little secret:
I love awake newborn photographs.
There is something incredibly special about capturing those tiny eyes looking toward Mom or Dad. Sometimes we get serious little expressions. Sometimes a baby looks directly toward the camera. And sometimes we capture an expression that immediately makes everyone in the room laugh.
Those images are often unexpected favorites.
Newborn photography doesn't have to consist entirely of sleepy, posed photographs.
Awake portraits allow us to capture your baby exactly as they are in that moment.
And when those alert little eyes finally become heavy?
Then we transition into those sweet, peaceful newborn portraits you've been imagining.
We Follow Baby's Lead
A newborn photography session is meant to unfold at a comfortable pace, allowing plenty of time for your baby’s needs.
Babies need breaks.
They may need to be fed, changed, cuddled, burped, or simply held by Mom or Dad for a little while.
That isn't interrupting the session.
That is part of the session.
When baby needs something, we stop.
There is no reason for parents to feel embarrassed because their newborn is crying or needs another feeding. I promise you, your baby will not be the first newborn who needed extra time to settle.
Creating a calm environment and allowing room for baby's needs helps everyone relax—and relaxed parents often help create a calmer experience for baby too.
Sometimes the Best Photographs Happen While We're Waiting
When baby isn't ready for an individual portrait, that doesn't mean photography has to stop.
Those moments can become the perfect opportunity for photographs with Mom.
Or Dad.
Or siblings.
Some of the most meaningful newborn photographs aren't complicated poses at all.
They're baby curled against Mom's chest.
Dad looking down at this tiny person he can't quite believe is finally here.
An older sibling carefully touching baby's little fingers.
Mom kissing the top of baby's head.
These photographs tell a completely different part of the newborn story.
Years from now, your child isn't going to look through their newborn album wondering whether they slept through the session.
They're going to see how tiny they were in your arms.
They're going to see how you looked at them.
They're going to see how loved they were.
What If My Baby Cries?
They probably will at some point.
And that's okay too.
Crying is communication for a newborn. It doesn't automatically mean something is wrong or that the session isn't going well.
Sometimes baby needs a feeding.
Sometimes they need to burp.
Sometimes they want Mom.
Sometimes they don't like being moved from the very comfortable position they had finally chosen for themselves—which, honestly, is understandable!
We take our time figuring out what baby needs.
There is no prize for rushing through a newborn session.
My priority is creating a comfortable experience while capturing beautiful portraits of this incredibly short chapter in your family's life.
Should I Try to Keep My Baby Awake Before the Session?
Parents often receive all kinds of advice before newborn photographs.
"Keep baby awake all morning!"
"Don't let them nap!"
"Feed them at exactly this time!"
And while having a baby arrive with a full tummy can sometimes help them settle, I don't want parents stressing about completely rearranging their newborn's natural rhythm.
If your baby sleeps before the session, don't panic.
If your baby ate earlier than planned, don't panic.
And if your carefully planned morning completely falls apart before you've even left the house?
Welcome to parenthood.
Come anyway.
We'll take it from there.
Your Job During the Session Is Actually Pretty Simple
Parents sometimes arrive feeling responsible for making the session successful.
You're not.
You don't need to know how to pose your baby.
You don't need to know where to stand.
You don't need to worry about whether your baby is "behaving."
And you definitely don't need to apologize for your newborn being a newborn.
My job as your photographer is to guide you through the experience.
Your job is simply to love your baby.
We'll handle the rest together.
Why Experience Matters With Newborn Photography
Choosing a newborn photographer isn't only about finding someone whose photographs look beautiful.
Experience matters.
Newborn sessions require patience, flexibility, an understanding of newborn behavior, careful posing, and the ability to change direction when baby has other plans.
Because babies almost always have other plans.
An experienced photographer isn't expecting every session to follow exactly the same formula.
One baby may give us beautiful sleepy photographs immediately.
Another may spend half the session staring curiously around the studio.
Another may want to be held for a while before settling.
The final gallery should still feel intentional and beautiful because the experience was designed around the baby who actually arrived—not an imaginary "perfect" newborn.

The newborn stage is incredibly short.
Those curled-up legs begin stretching out.
Tiny fingers get longer.
Cheeks change.
Expressions change.
And suddenly that brand-new baby doesn't look quite so new anymore.

Your baby does not need to be perfectly sleepy for us to create something beautiful.
