There is something almost impossible to explain about a baby’s first year

While you are living it, the days can feel incredibly full. There are feedings, diaper changes, sleepless nights, doctor appointments, new routines, and a thousand little things to remember. And yet, somehow, you blink—and the tiny newborn you were just holding is sitting up, laughing, crawling across the floor, and reaching for their first birthday cake.

That is why I believe photographing your baby’s first year is about so much more than having beautiful pictures.

It is about creating a visual record of a season your family will never experience in quite the same way again.

As a maternity, newborn, and baby photographer, I have had the privilege of watching families move through these beautiful chapters for more than two decades. From the anticipation of pregnancy to those first newborn snuggles and eventually that incredible first birthday, every stage tells a different piece of your family's story.

A three-month milestone session doesn't need to be elaborate. In fact, simplicity often makes these portraits even more timeless.

The goal isn't necessarily to create a complicated theme.

It's simply to remember this version of your baby.

Their round cheeks.

Their bright eyes.

The way they are beginning to recognize your voice and respond when you walk into the room.

These seemingly ordinary details are exactly what you'll miss later.

4. Six-Month Portraits: One of My Favorite Milestones

If you ask me which baby milestone is especially fun to photograph, six months is always high on the list.

This is often when we start getting those big gummy smiles and so much personality.

Many babies are beginning to sit with assistance or independently, grab their toes, laugh, interact, and really engage with the camera.

Suddenly, your sleepy newborn has become this expressive little person.

For families searching for baby milestone photography in Miami, I always recommend considering a six-month session because the difference between newborn and six months is remarkable.

It's also a wonderful opportunity for a few updated portraits with Mom, Dad, or siblings.

You don't necessarily need a huge family session every few months. Sometimes just stepping into a few frames with your baby creates exactly the photograph you will treasure later.

5. Nine Months: Personality Has Officially Arrived

By nine months, things are getting interesting!

Baby may be crawling, pulling up, clapping, waving, making funny faces, or giving you that very serious expression that somehow makes everyone laugh.

This stage is less about perfect posing and more about personality.

And that is exactly what makes it beautiful.

Nine-month portraits capture your baby somewhere between infancy and toddlerhood. You can see little glimpses of who they are becoming, while they still have so much of that sweet baby look.

Keeping the styling clean and timeless allows your baby to remain the focus.

Because twenty years from now, you won't care whether the props were trendy.

You'll want to see their face.

6. The First Birthday: Celebrating How Far You've Come

And then, somehow, they're ONE.

The first birthday feels different because it isn't only a celebration of your baby.

You made it through the first year.

You watched your baby go from being completely dependent on you to developing preferences, expressions, favorite foods, favorite people, and a personality all their own.

First birthday photography can certainly be fun and celebratory, but it doesn't have to revolve around an elaborate theme.

Some of my favorite first birthday portraits are simple, beautiful images that focus on the child.

Their smile.

Their curls.

Their little hands.

The way they stand.

The expressions that everyone in the family recognizes immediately.

This is also a beautiful time to update your family portrait.

You don't have to photograph everything professionally.

Choose the chapters that matter most to you.

If I were helping a family select the essential sessions, I would start with:

Maternity → Newborn → Six Months → First Birthday

Those four sessions tell an incredibly beautiful story.

If you want a more complete record of baby's transformation, adding three- and nine-month portraits creates an even richer first-year collection.

The most important thing is consistency and intention.

Rather than waiting until you suddenly realize your baby has changed, think about their first year before it begins. Planning milestone photography ahead of time means these sessions become part of the journey instead of something you are scrambling to schedule afterward.
